Celebrated for the first time in 1996, World Athletics Day was created by the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) for young athletes or kids who are passionate about sports. Usually, this international event takes place every year in May.
Athletics, which is a collection of sporting events that includes running, jumping, throwing and walking, has a long history. Athletic competitions have been organized ever since the Ancient Olympic Games in 776 BC. The word is derived from the Ancient Greek athlētēs, which means ‘combatant in public games’. Keeping faithful to this core meaning, World Athletics Day takes the form of championships for young athletes who are aged 17 or younger.
Sports organizations and school teams from all over the world get involved in the celebrations. The aim is to make athletics more popular among children and young people, and to encourage them to discover their sporting talents. Looking back on past accomplishments of the initiative, there are several significant results. Different schools have adopted athletics as one of their main sports. Talented young people have had the opportunity to discover and showcase their talent, and some of them have even been offered professional opportunities. Lucky participants have also won grand prizes in the form of tickets to international sports events.
How can you celebrate World Athletics Day? Even if your school doesn’t join the celebration officially, you can still organize your own event. Talk to your teacher and classmates and try to set up small competitions like running or jumping. If your school doesn’t have a sports area, make class presentations about the history of athletics and about the most successful athletes. And, of course, just go outside and play sports with your family and friends! This is the best way to celebrate this important day.
